Movies that Shouldn't Have Traumatized You But Did
I know that there is a thread similar to this in the Disney Films section, but I wanted to address the non-Disney films that terrified us as children.
Even though including Disney films in the list is fine. x)
When you were little, were you traumatized by a movie or cinema moment that shouldn't have scared you but did anyway? And even more interestingly, do
you still fear to tread anywhere near that movie, even if you know it's not supposed to be scary? x3
I have like, a dozen movies that scared the living daylights out of me and were completely stupid/silly. The rock people in "Neverending Story,"
"The Nightmare Before Christmas" (sent me running out of the room every time and now I ADORE that film), the hysterical moment of "Pee Wee's Big
Adventure" when Marge the trucker lady pulls that claymation face, the beginning of "An American Tale" with the cat holocaust, "Fern Gully," that
part in "Milo and Otis" where poor Milo is floating down the river in the dark, "Men in Black" (haha, shaddup), Jabba the Hut from "Star Wars,"
the list goes on and on.
And of course, there were movies that were actually scary and will always live on in my mind, thanks to my brother being a horror-movie fanatic and
the selfish/thoughtless actions of the some of the adults in my life. "Candy Man," "Poltergeist," "The Langaleers," and, what is considered
probably the most terrifying if not disturbing image to ever come out of a classic film: the final scene of the original Vincent Price movie "The
Fly" involving the man-fly caught in the spider's web. Even if you can get over the dated effects, the very concept is nauseating, terrifying, and
tear-endusing, throughout the decades and for people of all ages and backgrounds.
But the king of them all for me was "Ernest Scared Stupid." COMPLETELY idiotic movie, but when I was four, it was a totally different monster. At
that age those trolls were real and terrifying, and throughout my childhood they were the constant source of all my terror and paranoia, infilitrating
every single one of my nightmares and becoming the first thought I had anytime I was on edge or looking out a dark window at night. My dad made a
hobby out of scaring his kids, and using the trolls was his main weapon.
Even when I grew up, when I stopped dreaming about them and thinking about them, the trolls still made cameos in my nightmares, if only because my
brain came to rely on them as the definition of what is scary. To this day I refuse to watch that movie, even if I'm told it's idiotic and
hysterical. But I also remember that there are concepts in that movie that I believe should never be introduced to children ("Ernest Scared Stupid"
is often placed in the genre of "children's films): trolls dragging children under the ground and then turning them into wooden statues, appearing
in a child's bed after she turns over (I feared to sleep on my side for years), etc., etc. I hope to never watch that movie again, if only because I
fear to trigger an old trauma and set me back years of progress, if only in my nightmares.
Incredibly stupid. But for me it's the real deal. x) [/rant]
So anyone else have a childhood trauma thanks to the magic of film?
I SWEAR I will finish a new sig soon. >_>

Call me crazy but I was scared to death of the original Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory movie.
That scene where they are going threw the tunnel in that boat and Gene Wilder starts to sing all crazy. *shudders*
Don't even get me stated on the Oompa Loompas. For some reason when I was small I was so terrified of there orange skin and green hair.
But as I got older I realized what an amazing movie it is. Still that tunnel scene freaks me out to this day lol.

HO MAN, I can't believe I forgot that one!!! xD Certainly I high-ranking movie for me on the trauma list. x3333 Definitely not a problem for me now,
but then? Completely and totally. I was also quite upset because I felt that Gene Wilder had no right to harshly judge the morality of those children.
xD

ha i think i had issues when i was a child
* Alice in Wonderland - I was so freaked out by tweedle dee tweedle dum like you do not understand when ever they came on i would scream my head
off..and mum would fast forward it for me :P Also also i was pretrified when Alice was lost, when the dog sweeped up the path... ....
* Basil the Great Mouse Detective - The beginning scene when that little girl's dad gets take away, i swear i closed my eyes and blocked my ears at
that part. And also the end scene when basil fights with ratigan.
that's all i can think of...
erm...and when the ring came out on dvd i reeeeally wanted to see it, so i did, and it was at night (stupid amy). I swear i can picture the whole
thing in my head. The way the people would look when that well chick killed them >___> and when she comes out of the well with her hand >____< because
i used to, actually still do, sleep right next to the wall and i always scared myself because i would think her hand would come over the edge of my
bed :P

JAWS! I know that it was all made up, but my god I was sooo scared (and still am) of sharks after that movie. Then there was IT, now I permanatley
hate clowns and spiders 10000X more. Other than that I think that would be it for now, but those two are on the top 5 in my mind

I love Jaws (and sharks), but then again I didn't see the film until I was much older.
The only films I remember scaring me really badly were both animatons. One was Pinochino, and it lead to a permanet fear of whales, I'm scared to
death of the creatures! And another was an animated version of Jack and the Bean Stalk. I could never watch past the bean stalk growing, because it
would go close up to the vines growing, and they would creak and stuff as they shot up, and for some reason it used to terrify me. Plus I never knew
the story when I was a kid, so it was like "Why is that happening? WHATS AT THE TOP?" I couldn't handle it!
Some stupid, so-not-scary films have creeped me out when I've been grown too. Finding Nemo, for example. I nearly ran out the cinema screaming when
that whale came on, and I still have to completely skip that chapter on my DVD.

ET! Ongsh that movie scared me like there was no tomorrow. I don't think I've watched it since I was like 8. And
Gremlins! My mum taped it off the TV for me like 2 years ago and I sat through the beginning, but after that I was like "NOOOOO HIDE
ME!" Titanic I watched as a little 5 year old or something and that gave me the shivers - probably because I didn't understand what
was going on but whatever ...
And Amy already knows this but ongsh SUPERNATURAL CREEPS ME OUT!*is ashamed*

still, it scared me.

Fantasia scared the living sheep outta me. *shuddershudder* and I have noooooo reason why. Lasst year was the first time I had watched it since I was
like seven and I hid under my covers the WHOLE time thinking something was gonna happen, but now, it's one of my favorite movies to watch. The music
makes it all worth watching.
Gremlins was another one. it was all cute when Gizmo was cute and furry then BOOM scary bad dudes. Snow White too. When she turns into the old hag.....effing creepy man. hasoiuhgliasughli It STILL scares me.
hmmm what else? The opening of Dumbo when they're in the rain. I have no clue......but it was scary. aaaaaaaaand that's all I can think of right
now :/

Disney films never ruined me. Fantasia and Chernabog were just cartoons.
However, Chuckie. God, man.... I don't even know why. But now that I've rewatched all the Chuckie movies I have come to the conclusion that it was
because the kid was so easily pushed around by Chuckie, a doll, that it freaked me out. But now all those movies are funny.
Otherwise... ain't nothing freaked me out anymore in a movie.

Violet, I just love the irony that you love sharks but you're scared of whales. xD I had a similiar experience with Jaws, I didn't
see it til I was older and I think it's just a fun flick. x3 Mom wouldn't let me go anywhere near that movie for years, because it traumatized her
so badly in the theater that she pretty much flung her popcorn bucket into the air.
| Quote: | | And Gremlins! My mum taped it off the TV for me like 2 years ago and I sat through the beginning, but after that I was like

You know it's so bizarre that Gremlins is in the children's genre of films, because of the way it was marketted in the 80s. When
actually the film was THE movie that spurred the MPA to create the PG-13 rating. I wasn't too scared of the Gremlins themselves, but when Gismo was
multiplying in that disgusting, painful manner...hoookay, didn't need to see that. o_O

I had to leave the theater during that part when it got rereleased, lol. xD

Babe did jar me up a little, now that I think about it. All movies that had animals sad or in pain REALLY freaked me out as a kid
(still do if it's real enough). For years my dad would make me instantly depressed and angry if he did an impression of little Babe crying "I want
my mommmmm..." x)
Still A LOT less scarier than the little boys transforming into donkeys in Pinocchio. Crying out that they wanted their mothers and
stuff...and then they never get saved. O______O
| Quote: | | annnndddd Beauty and the Beast was so scary for me |
Haha!! BatB was my favorite movie that I watched again and again, but I always had to fastforward the first scene with the Beast
screaming at Maurice. Freaking scarreh, man. xD
The creepy part of ET for me was when Elliot's gone to throw away the box of pizza or something in the dark and he's hearing those
noises. Or something. x)
Ack, I just remembered some more:
Beetlejuice and Ghostbusters. Scared the living daylights out of me, and was shown at like, a million sleepovers I
went to and my parents were always hounding me to watch them because they were "OMG so funny." I can watch Ghostbusters now, o'course, but
Beetlejuice...I haven't given it another chance yet. xD
Pretty much all Tim Burton films scared the bejeesus out of me until I was old enough to appreciate them and see them for more than "terrifying music
and eery colors." x)
I SWEAR I will finish a new sig soon. >_>
